Why a lender would say no

Education loans are refused on the co-applicant far more often than on the student. Check your FOIR, CIBIL, and collateral eligibility months before applying.

The loan

Total cost minus family savings, not the whole cost.

Longer means a smaller EMI.

Public banks are lower.

Public sector banks reserve their larger unsecured limits for listed institutions.

The co-applicant

Usually a parent. This is the part the lender underwrites.

What actually reaches the bank account each month, after tax.

Home loan, vehicle, personal, card instalments. All of them, added up.

Free once a year from each bureau. Worth checking before you apply.

Property or a fixed deposit, held by a parent or close relative.

Fixed obligation to income ratio: the share of the co-applicant's monthly take-home pay already committed to EMIs, with the proposed education loan added on top. Lenders generally want the total under 60% and are comfortable below 40%. It causes more education loan rejections than the credit score does, and unlike the score you can work it out at home months before applying.

Where these thresholds come from

Unlike the visa figures elsewhere on this site, these are not government rates. The collateral and margin thresholds come from the model education loan scheme Indian banks work to. The ratio and score bands are published lender policy and industry norms, which differ between lenders and move without announcement. Treat them as typical, not exact, and last checked on 21 August 2026.
