How to judge a study abroad consultant in Hyderabad before you pay one

Ameerpet alone has more consultancies than some countries have universities. The good ones and the bad ones use the same words. Here is how to tell them apart in one meeting, with questions that work on us too.

How to judge a study abroad consultant in Hyderabad before you pay one

Searching for the best study abroad consultants in Hyderabad returns a list of firms that each call themselves the best. That is not useful. What is useful is knowing how the business works, because once you know who pays a consultant, you can tell in one conversation whether the advice is for you or for them.

Margam is a consultancy. These questions apply to us as much as to anyone in Ameerpet, Kukatpally, Madhapur or Begumpet, and we would rather you asked them than did not.

First, understand who pays

Most universities in the UK, Australia, Canada and Ireland pay recruitment agents a commission for every student they enrol, typically 10% to 20% of first-year tuition. On a £16,000 course that is £1,600 to £3,200 per student. The student pays the agent nothing, which is why so many consultancies advertise free counselling.

There is nothing wrong with this. It funds the office. The problem is what it does to the shortlist. A consultant paid by thirty partner universities has thirty universities to recommend, and a strong reason not to mention the thirty-first, even if it fits you better. The top US universities and almost all German public universities pay no commission, which is why some agencies steer students away from them.

Key Takeaway

Ask for the partner list in the first meeting. A consultancy that shows it to you without hesitation is being paid openly. One that does not have a list, or will not share it, is being paid quietly.

Nine questions for the first meeting

  • Which universities pay you, and will you show me the list? Then check whether your shortlist is all on it.
  • Will you recommend a university that does not pay you, if it fits me better? Ask for an example of a student they sent to one.
  • Who writes my SOP? If the answer is that they write it, the answer is wrong. Admissions teams read hundreds of agency SOPs and recognise the template. A good consultant edits and challenges yours.
  • What is your visa success rate, and how do you count it? Nobody can guarantee a visa. A firm claiming 100% is either counting only the files it chose to submit or not counting at all.
  • What happens if my visa is refused? The answer should include reading the refusal letter with you and the cost of reapplying, not a shrug.
  • Do you earn anything from the education loan or the forex provider you recommend? Many do. That is fine if disclosed, and a problem if not.
  • Will the counsellor I meet today be the one handling my file in six months? Staff turnover at volume agencies is high, and your file changes hands.
  • Has anyone in this office studied abroad? Lived experience of a visa interview and a first winter is worth more than a sales certification.
  • Can I speak to two students you placed last year at the universities you are recommending? Not testimonials on a wall. Phone numbers.

Reading the shortlist they give you

A shortlist built for you has a shape. It has one or two universities you might not get into, several where your profile is a clear match, and one or two safer options, and it can explain why each is there in terms of your marks, your budget and what you want afterward.

A shortlist built for the commission has a different shape. It clusters in one country, it has universities you had not heard of near the top, it does not mention cost until you ask, and the reason given for each is a ranking rather than your profile. If you have a 6.5 CGPA from an affiliated college and the list has no reach option and no honest conversation about what that CGPA means abroad, the list was not built from your file.

Signs to walk away

  • Pressure to pay a deposit to a university at the first or second meeting, before you have compared offers.
  • A guaranteed admission or a guaranteed visa. Neither exists.
  • IELTS coaching, loan, forex and accommodation all bundled in, with a discount for taking everything. Each bundle is a commission.
  • An SOP delivered in two days from a brief you gave in ten minutes.
  • No mention of the costs after tuition: the healthcare surcharge, the visa fee, rent, the deposit, the flight.
  • Reviews that are all five stars, all recent, and all two sentences long.
Quick Knowledge Check

A consultant in Ameerpet offers free counselling, a shortlist of six UK universities, and will write your SOP for you by Friday. Which part should worry you most?

What good looks like, in Hyderabad or anywhere

A good consultant tells you early if your profile needs a year of work experience before it is worth applying. They show you the commission list and then recommend a non-partner university when it fits. They send your SOP back with questions rather than sending you a finished one. They put the full cost in rupees in front of you before you pay a deposit, and they are reachable after the visa, when the accommodation falls through and the bank account will not open.

Hyderabad has firms like this. It also has a great many that are not. The questions above take twenty minutes and will sort them.
